ALPINISM (2024)
Last summer, I was invited to document Alpinism, a practice included in UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Approaching this subject as a non-mountaineer and confronting the vast imagery associated with the mountains was not easy. The result is a series that depicts some symbolic and metaphorical places in the history of alpinism, along with the essential equipment and actions of the practice. Alpinism is also a philosophy—a combination of history, technical and scientific knowledge, love for the mountains, and aesthetic pursuit—as I learned from the people who supported me in this work.
Spending time in the high mountains also means facing environmental, social, and economic phenomena that are more evident here than elsewhere, such as mass tourism (and sports) and climate change.
The project is part of UN:IT, a dialogue between contemporary photography and UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in Italy, promoted by Ministero della Cultura - ICCD and UNESCO.
More images, exhibition and book to come soon.
